Beavers Romp in 8 - 3 Wild Win Over Woeful Kings! Coming into this game, the Oakville Beavers looked like a team that couldn’t consistently play to their abilities after losing the week before and only scoring 3 goals in a overtime loss to the sad sack Wild Cats. This, after having gone on a 4 game winning streak. Missing their most prolific scorer Poddy and top scoring rookie Little Nam, there was doubt the Beavers could muster enough scoring power to win against the Kings. However, the Beavers got some unexpected balanced scoring from both lines to win easily over an undermanned and under talented Kings lineup. This night belonged to another rookie who almost single handedly filled the scoring void left by the absence of two of the three top Beaver scorers. Fieldmouse was a force all game setting a team record by scoring 4 goals in the 8 – 3 win. The second line counted for 5 goals and 9 points. The win also marked the return of another Beaver rookie, Smiles, in the net. Smiles had missed three games with a busted knee, but still managed to hold the Kings to 3 goals and bring his win total to 5 on the year. So confident were the Beavers in his return and needing him to get back into game form for the playoffs, Corsky invited the Kings to shoot at will. Midway through the first, the Kings opened the scoring on a strange play. Tall Gangly Guy heaved the puck high in front of the Beavers net, hitting his team mate in the chest with the puck rebounding in behind Smiles. As soon as the teams faced off after the horrid goal, Nammer, filling in for Little Nam, picked up the puck, raced across the Kings blue line and let it go. The Kings goalie gave up a juicy rebound that K-Lo couldn’t get by him, but Fieldmouse was there to pick up the second rebound to score his third goal in three games, the second time in a row he has opened the scoring for the Beavers. 28 seconds later, the Kings scored again, making it 3 goals in 41 seconds. Time to change them up. Nammer got his first goal of the year (is that right?) a minute and a half later to knot things up at 2 a piece, set up by Rat and Corsky allowing them both to tie Poddy with the team lead in assists. They would both later overtake Poddy by each setting up another goal. The Beer Burglar was sent to the sin bin after taking an interference penalty at 9:50. By this time the Beavers were in complete control of the game. Rat was ringing bullets of post which prompted Paddy to shout out “Is that all you got?” Rat finally got his second point of the game when he scored short handed after being set up by Corsky. All the time Corsky has spent hanging around the opposition end like a punk at a Mac’s store was starting to pay off when he got his team leading ninth assist. The Kings scored again with 1:05 left in the first, but the second line responded 7 seconds later when Fieldmouse picked up a pass off the boards from K-Lo and he strategically shot the puck off a Kings defender’s ass and past the goalie for his second goal. “I don’t want my name on that goal.” said Fieldmouse. The Turkish Delight joined the scoring parade to start the second period when he received a pass from Rat in front of the net for his 7th goal of the year. The Turkish Delight didn’t have anyone to stick handle around so he had no choice but to put a few moves on the goalie and put the puck in the net. The assist by Rat tied him with Corsky for the team lead. Minutes later, Corsky had a questionable hooking penalty called on him shortly after he was clearly tripped by a Kings forward. The ref looked like he was going to call a penalty on the Kings forward, but dropped his arm as quickly as he raised it. Must have been feeling pity for the Kings. While on the penalty kill, Van Wilder, who has been showing some speed in the last couple of games, burst out of his defensive zone to lead a 3 on 1 rush. As he went in on net, he dropped the puck to cement hands K-Lo who managed to get a shot off. Fortunately, sure fire Fieldmouse was there to pick up the rebound to record the hat trick. Beer Burglar took over the team lead in penalty minutes from Poddy when he got 2 for tripping to end the period. Van Wilder got in the act again to start the third when he took a pass from the Beer Burglar and sped down the ice. This time he took one of his patented rainbow slap shots as he crossed the blue line that went off the blade of a Kings defender and into the net. That's 3 points in his last two games. By this time the only two Beavers not to get on the score sheet were Paddy and the Red Rocket. Even with a 4 goal lead, the Rocket minds defensive responsibilities (“Only one deep!”) and Paddy… well he’s always busy making sure the beaver damn doesn’t burst. This guy knows beavers. Fieldmouse ended the scoring with his team record 4th of the game on a rush with the Turkish Delight with less than two minutes to go. After the game, Fieldmouse was asked if he had ever scored 4 goals in a game before. “Oh yeah, when I was seventeen.” he responded. No one believed him for a second. With 6 games remaining, the Beavers strong play of late puts them in a position to easily hold onto first in the E1 division and 5 more wins would ensure a .500 season. With the exception of 10 minutes of sloppy defensive play in their last game, the Beavers have played a much tighter team defensive game over the last 6 games. The defense have been making strong breakout passes from their zone that has lead to increased scoring. With their playoff form starting to come around, the Beavers are starting to look like good bets to win the championship.
