Stella | A small Greene King Pub pub that is very popular with the local professionals after a hard day's work. Dedication to detail ensures the beer and food is always great. Top rated pub by Ollie! Cannon Street

The Hatchet is that now-endangered species, a pub that sells great beer to blameless chaps. Two small rooms, one in back with a fireplace and tables, the bar in front with a telly on a shelf and bar perches, are the stage for Greene King IPA and Abbot Ale. There’s Angostura and fresh fruit behind the bar too, and a decent range of spirits, but though the bar is cocktail-willing, the punters are weak. And why shouldn’t they be, with such well-kept beer? It’s a friendly place, and the air is thick with enough blokey, beery nonsense to keep Time Out’s ‘Man Who Fell Asleep’ contributor in copy for weeks (‘Goalkeepers aren’t really footballers’, ‘When she says that, I swear that beer will come down my nose’). If you’re happy to stand and have a pint and an inconsequential natter to relax and unwind, you are now entering old-school pub heaven. Time Out Bars, Pubs & Clubs Guide 2006/7
